CPD Short Course

Podcast Production, Distribution & Studio Operations

Podcasting is one of the most accessible creative careers in the UK, but the gap between a hobbyist setup and a broadcast-grade production is wider than most people realise. Held, over three Saturdays at the London College of Contemporary Music in Zone 1, this practical and career-focused course is delivered by the Co-Founders of The Lodge Studios, Javen Palmer & Michael Akinfisoye.

SAT 14 NOV

Production Fundamentals

Translating production knowledge into a complete podcast recording workflow. The shortest learning curve for anyone already familiar with audio.

Block A · 11:00–1:00
Mic Craft & Signal Flow

Short teach sprints on dynamic vs condenser mics, polar patterns, gain staging, and recording in 32-bit float. Each lesson is immediately applied at the workstation.

Practical
  • Set up a 3-mic table configuration from scratch and pass a "broadcast-ready" levels check
  • Capture a 32-bit float test recording, deliberately clip it, then rescue it in post
Block B · 2:00–4:00
Run a Full Session

Step into the producer's chair using the London College of Contemporary Music's live rooms and control room as a podcast studio. Build a session from a blank template and run it.

Practical
  • Build a session template in a DAW (Logic, Pro Tools, Reaper) with bussing, monitor mix and safety tracks
  • Record a 10-minute 2-host + 1-guest segment, rotating roles so everyone runs the desk, hosts and engineers
  • Sit through a live group review of each take, identifying fixes in real time
SAT 21 NOV

Post-Production, Distribution & Video

Editing in the AI era, getting a podcast onto every platform that matters, and filming for YouTube as the largest podcast platform in the world.

Block A · 11:00–1:00
Edit, Master, Distribute

Teach sprints on AI editing tools, traditional DAW polish, loudness standards, and the modern distribution stack. Sat 14 Nov recordings are edited live in the room.

Practical
  • Speed-edit challenge: turn a 20-minute raw recording into a tight 8-minute cut using an AI tool, then refine in a DAW
  • Master to broadcast spec (-16 LUFS stereo) and A/B against a reference podcast on studio monitors
  • Set up an RSS feed via RedCircle or Buzzsprout and publish a private test episode to Spotify and Apple Podcasts
Block B · 2:00–4:00
Film the Podcast

The London College of Contemporary Music's video and audio facilities become a full multicam podcast set for the afternoon. Light, frame, switch and record a real conversation.

Practical
  • Record a 10-minute conversation while one learner switches live, then compare against a multicam edit in post
  • Cut a 30-second vertical short and design a YouTube thumbnail from real episode footage
SAT 28 NOV

Studio Operations & Going Live

The bridge from "I can produce a podcast" to "I could run or work at a podcast studio." The business behind the studio.

Block A · 11:00–1:00
The Business of a Podcast Studio

Teach sprints on studio business models, pricing, session-day economics, and how a working podcast studio actually runs. Real scenarios worked through in teams.

Practical
  • Studio P&L challenge: price a session day, project monthly revenue and defend your numbers
  • Build a one-page client onboarding flow: booking form, deposit policy, intake questions and day-of SOP
  • Run a mock client call, then a group debrief on what worked
Block B · 2:00–4:00
Final Live Podcast: the capstone

A full live podcast run end to end. Real guest, real client conditions, finished output goes into your portfolio.

Practical
  • Production roles assigned (engineer, switcher, host, producer, editor) with a real external guest
  • Run the full session live: pre-show brief, recording, on-the-fly problem solving, post-show debrief
  • Finished episodes published to a real distribution platform within 7 days, with individual feedback
